OCEAN REEF MARINA
200. Mr M.J. FOLKARD to the Minister for Lands:
I refer to the McGowan government's
commitment to deliver the long-awaited Ocean Reef marina that will create
hundreds of jobs and provide an economic boost to the northern suburbs, and a new
home for my Returned and Services League of Australia club. Can the minister
update the house on this important infrastructure project; and can the minister
advise the house whether he is aware of anyone who does not want this project
to go ahead?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members, I want
to hear the answer.

I have been surprised by the level
of disruption by the opposition in question time today. I have never seen an
opposition so desperate to stop me quoting the Leader of the Opposition.
Perhaps that says it all about the nature of his quotes. The Ocean Reef marina
was a key commitment of the member for Burns Beach and the member for
Joondalup, as an important job-creating activity centre for the northern
suburbs of Perth. It has been talked about for a long time. We took it to the
election in 2017, and we were elected with the strong endorsement of the people
of the northern suburbs, which saw the election of the member for Burns Beach
as the local member. We have now started working on that project because we see
many jobs being created, and not just during the construction phase. As the
Premier has highlighted in this place many times, our focus is on job creation,
which appears to be working, but it is also about the activity centre that will
be created when the marina is up and running. I thought that, generally, something
like this would have the unanimous support of members, so members can imagine
my surprise when my friend the member for Kalgoorlie belled the cat just this
week and highlighted the fact that the opposition
has a view that it will cancel the Ocean Reef marina. I think the member for
Kalgoorlie released a pre- election policy a little bit early in
Kalgoorlie when he said, in an article in The Kalgoorlie Miner —
funds from the $120 million Ocean
Reef Marina in Perth should be redirected to regional projects
He went on to say that the money
should be allocated —
to other projects that are really
needed.''
I think the member for Kalgoorlie
has belled the cat on the Liberal Party's view around the northern
suburbs of Perth, and the important job-creating activity centre that the Ocean
Reef marina will become. If the Liberal Party has not learnt from the last
election that it ignored the northern suburbs during its time in government,
the members for Burns Beach, Wanneroo and Joondalup all strongly endorsed our
commitment to the Ocean Reef marina. The people of the northern suburbs need to
know that they cannot trust the Liberal Party on the Ocean Reef marina. The
opposition is looking to any chance it can get to reverse that commitment of
this government, but I assure members, including the member for Burns Beach,
that this government is committed to it.
