PERTH STORMS — POWER OUTAGE
I refer to the storm that hit the Perth metropolitan area on Monday. (1) How many homes and businesses are still without power as at 11.00 am today? Although I use the word “today”, I actually refer to Wednesday, 24 March when some notice of the question was given. (2) Which suburbs still have homes and businesses without power? (3) When is it envisaged that power will be restored to these areas? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the honourable member for her first question, which is very pertinent. As the honourable member pointed out, this answer is relevant as of 11.30 am yesterday. I will provide an update at the end of this response. (1) Since the storm hit Perth on Monday, Western Power crews have worked tirelessly to restore power to more than 140 000 properties. As at 11.30 am yesterday, 11 500 homes and businesses in the metropolitan area were without power. (2) As at 11.30 am today, the following areas had the most residential and business power outages: Victoria Park, Woodlands, Yokine, Daglish, Thornlie, St James, Innaloo and Scarborough. (3) Western Power expects to have the majority of faults affecting more than one customer completed by this evening. There will still be a number of single customer faults that will take some further time to restore. Western Power is proactively speaking to customers to confirm if they are still without power to help streamline the restoration process. As at about an hour ago, less than 1 000 single customer homes are still without power. It is anticipated that they will all be reconnected either this evening or first thing tomorrow. About 20 electrical contractors have come from Victoria to assist us in the process. I have to tip my hat to Western Power in this instance. We are talking about 140 000 homes. An above-ground network will have issues with storms such as the one that we had on Monday. I sympathise with householders throughout the metropolitan region and right across the state for what they have had to endure as a result of the loss of electricity. The workers at Western Power have been fastidious; they have been working tirelessly over the past three days, 24 hours non-stop. To get the figure down from 140 000 to less than 1 000 in three days is commendable. I am advised that all homes will be connected by tomorrow.
