(1) Is the importation of genetically modified seed into Western Australia prohibited?
(2) If yes to (1), where is this prohibition in the legislation?
(3) If no to (1), will you amend the legislation to achieve this prohibition?
(4) Is there a requirement for the certification of genetically modified seed being imported into Western Australia?
(5) If no to (4), why not?

(2) Not applicable. (3) This a matter about which I intend to seek advice from the Gene Technology Community Consultative Committee that I am in the process of establishing. (4) & (5) Under the Quarantine Act 1908 (Commonwealth), all imported grains, seeds and biological materials which have any GM presence must be declared to the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) prior to importation. There is currently no other requirement for GM-related certification of seed being imported into Australia or Western AustraliaAgain, this is a matter I will refer to the Gene Technology Community Consultative Committee for advice.
