The minister knows that I am concerned about the threat bushfires pose to my electorate. Can she provide an update of the Department of Conservation and Land Management’s prescribed burning program? Dr J.M. EDWARDS

I thank the member for the question. Over the past few days, members may have noticed some haze over Perth. Part of the reason for that haze is the prescribed burning that is taking place on the outskirts of Perth. In the past few days, burns have been undertaken east of Mundaring Weir, and yesterday burns were undertaken about 50 kilometres east of Armadale near the Brookton Highway. Meteorological conditions have been monitored and care has been taken to minimise the level of haze over the city. Although haze levels have been slightly raised, they remain in accordance with health and environmental standards. This morning it was a bit hard to tell how much of the haze was the result of people burning wood fires overnight because of the cold, and how much was the result of the smoke from the prescribed burns that has come into the city with the breeze. Late last year I instructed CALM to intensify its rate of prescribed burning. I am happy to report that it is anticipated that by the end of June it will have burnt 140 000 hectares, which compares very favourably with the 75 000 hectares that were burnt in 2001-02 and the 88 000 hectares that were burnt in 2000-01. This week burns are being undertaken at the Watheroo National Park, the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, in pine plantations near Harvey and at all places in Woop Woop block north east of Kirup. Several members interjected. Dr J.M. EDWARDS: I think we should have a quiz about whose electorate that is in. One of the members opposite is in the running. It is most unusual for CALM to conduct prescribed burns in June; however, as the weather conditions are favourable, we will continue to burn until moisture levels rise significantly.
