I refer to the Inspector of Custodial Services report 27, in which it is stated that during 2003-04 the number of people imprisoned for fine default was 755. (1) How many people were in prison for fine default from 30 June 2004 to 1 May 2005? (2) Has the legislation approved by cabinet in April 2004 received a drafting priority yet? (3) When will the legislation be introduced into Parliament? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The number of people in prison for fine default for the month of April 2005 is not yet available. The number of people in prison for fine default for the period 1 July 2004 to 31 March 2005 is 880. However, of those 880 cases, 104 were already in prison on remand. These figures do not include cases in which fine default is simply included in an overall term of imprisonment with other sentences. I imagine that is because it might be difficult to extract the figure. (2) No. (3) No time has been determined.
