IRON ORE INDUSTRY — DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING
I refer to the answer provided yesterday seeking more detail on a study into downstream processing in the iron ore industry. (1) Will the government confirm that in or around 2006, a joint study was undertaken by the then Department of Industry and Resources and the Chinese government into where different aspects of iron and steel production could most efficiently be located? (2) Can the minister confirm that the result of this report was presented to the Chinese government in Beijing by a DOIR officer? (3) Will he now table that report? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Yes; but the study was into aspects of iron making only. (2) The results were provided as an overview presentation to Chinese steel mills in Beijing in 2006 as part of a joint seminar between Chinese government officers and the former Department of Industry and Resources. (3) The review was undertaken jointly between the former Department of Industry and Resources and the Chinese central government’s Chinese Industrial Overseas Development and Planning Association. Confidential Australian and Chinese company information has been used in the modelling, and approval for release would be required from the National Development and Reform Commission and individual companies.
