WATERWAYS MONITORING — COLLIE
708. Hon GIZ WATSON to the minister representing the
Minister for Environment:
I refer to the recent discovery of
mercury in sediment in waterways in the Collie Basin, and my question without
notice 653 of 18 September 2012.
(1) Will the
minister provide the outcome of the health risk analysis water sampling program
and sediment sampling in the Collie River near Collie and tributaries near
Collie that was completed on 13 September 2012?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) Has a report been prepared on
the health risk analysis?
(4) If yes to (3), will the minister
table the report?
(5) If no to (4), why not?
(6) Is any testing of rainwater
tanks in Collie being undertaken?
(7) If no to (6), why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1)–(5) The
health risk analysis was a preliminary scan to inform the water and sediment
sampling programs that were completed on 13 September 2012. This analysis was
undertaken as a planning exercise and no written report was prepared. The
Department of Environment and Conservation has undertaken to provide an initial
report on all of the sampling outlined in question without notice 653 by the
end of October 2012.
(6) No.
(7) The testing
of rainwater tanks is the responsibility of the landowner to ensure the safety
of the potable water, as recommended by the Department of Health's
urban rainwater collection and country rainwater collection fact sheets.
