QuestionView source ↗
I refer the minister to the questions on notice supplementary information and detailed capital works schedule provided by the minister in response to my questions regarding the Water Corporation’s capital works program and, in particular, the information concerning investment in the Yarragadee metropolitan southern bores. (1) Can the minister explain the difference between the figures of $23.5 million given on page 5 of the supplementary information and $27.47 million shown in the detailed capital works program paper on page 32? (2) Can the minister provide further information on the nature of that expenditure and, in particular, whether it relates to the development of the south Yarragadee bore field at Nannup? (3) If the expenditure is for the purpose of providing additional water for Perth’s water system, can the minister indicate - (a) how much it will cost to connect the bore field to the system; (b) will the water be transported through the new Harvey-Stirling Dams infrastructure; and (c) how long will it take to connect? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) Figures in the detailed information document represent costs estimates at the beginning of the 2002-03 financial year. Therefore, the figure of $27.47 million represents the originally estimated cost of the Yarragadee metropolitan southern bores project. The figure of $23.5 million is the actual amount spent during 2002-03 on this project. The lower than estimated expenditure on this project resulted from lower than budgeted contract prices. (2) The Yarragadee southern bores project located in the metropolitan area consisted of drilling two deep artesian bores into the Yarragadee aquifer at Scarborough, re-equipping an existing deep bore at Gwelup, constructing 17 kilometres of collector mains size 500 to 1000 millimetres in diameter from the bores to Yokine reservoir, and providing chlorination and fluoridation dosing equipment. This expenditure does not relate to the development of the south west Yarragadee bore field at Nannup. (3) The cost of connecting the Yarragadee metropolitan southern bores to the integrated water supply system is included in the figure of $23.5 million. The bores are located within the Perth metropolitan area. Therefore, water will not be transferred through the new Harvey-Stirling Dams infrastructure.
