(e) was the loss or theft of any of these computers reported to the police;
(f) if yes to (e), when were these reports made;
(g) of those reported, what has been the outcome;
(h) if any computers that were lost or stolen were not reported to the police, why not;
(i) what steps, if any, have been put into place with a view to eliminating, or at least reducing, these losses; and
(j) when were these steps put into place?

(a) 162. There are 16,000 notebooks as part of the Notebook for Teachers program and teachers are entitled to use these at home. Sixty seven of the stolen notebooks were part of that program, while the remaining 95 belonged to schools, district offices and the department central office.
(b) $261,321.
(c) There have been no reports of stolen notebook computers containing sensitive information.
(d) Policies are in place for acceptable use, care of infrastructure and corporate information. Notebook for Teachers program notebooks are shipped with a password function to protect user logon accounts.
(e) Yes.
(f) The Department of Education and Training requires staff to report thefts as soon as practical following the theft.
(g) One Notebook for Teachers program notebook has been recovered. The others were subject to insurance claims.
(h) Not applicable.
(i) The majority of cases result from home burglaries and theft from private vehicles. DET and RiskCover have strongly advised that notebook computers are not to be left unattended in an area where it is at risk of being stolen e.g. in the cabin of a motor vehicle.
