MINE SAFETY INSPECTORS — INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION
I refer to the news item headed “State probes mine safety inspectors” on page 13 of The West Australian on 10 August 2010. (1) When was the independent investigation into mine safety inspectors launched? (2) What are the terms of reference for this investigation? (3) Who has been commissioned to undertake this investigation? (4) Will the investigator be empowered to undertake investigations at any mine site, mining company office, and government office as the investigator deems necessary? (5) If no to (4), why not Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) On 9 July 2010 I requested the Director General of the Department of Mines and Petroleum to arrange for an independent investigation to be carried out following the receipt of hundreds of parliamentary questions and a detailed letter from Mr Shaun Maddock outlining allegations about mine safety and bullying at certain Goldfields mine sites, and the conduct of the department’s mine safety inspectorate in relation to those matters. (2) I believe that the term of reference of this investigation should be kept confidential at this stage. (3) PricewaterhouseCoopers. (4) The Goldfields mine sites and the government officers involved in this investigation have been chosen on the basis that they have been the subject of allegations made in Mr Maddock’s letter and in hundreds of parliamentary questions. (5) Refer to the answer to (4).
