AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH — MURDOCH UNIVERSITY
(1) Can the minister confirm recent announcements by the Premier that the Department of Agriculture and Food’s research budget will be directed to Murdoch University, and has this proposition been discussed with the University of Western Australia and the department’s other partners in agricultural research? (2) If so, does UWA support this new direction? (3) Does this new direction mean that the department will become simply a supplier of information pamphlets for the agricultural industry, with no research capacity of its own? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the member for his question, to which the minister has responded — (1) I would like to stress that research and development is and will remain an important component of the services that the department delivers to agriculture and the wider community. The Premier referred to more research activity moving to Murdoch University in the future, as well as to other universities and institutes. Most of this is expected to occur through the potential co-location of the department, including laboratory facilities and research and development staff, at Murdoch—a project that has been in the planning stage for sometime. Some of the department’s research staff would also be housed on co-located sites at the University of Western Australia and Curtin University of Technology. This policy was part of the Liberal pre-election platform and was also Labor policy during the time of the last government. (2) Not applicable. (3) No.
