(2) If so, how did the government allow this situation to develop? (3) Is it correct that 15 400 people are now on the Homeswest waiting list? (4) Is the correct that some of these people have been forced to wait for up to seven years for public housing? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. He seems to be asking a lot of questions today. Hon Ray Halligan : I hope that does not upset you. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH : It does not. It must the member’s lucky day! (1)-(4) The figures quoted do not capture the full social housing stock. Social housing stock has increased by 476. As at 30 June 2007, the Department of Housing and Works owned a total of 38 183 properties that are used for social, public and community housing. The highly successful New Living urban renewal program has improved the location, amenity and design of homes and communities, and more than 2 000 home ownership opportunities have been created. Social housing is being provided in an environment of increasing demand and challenging housing market conditions, coupled with declining commonwealth funding in real terms. In the 2007-08 state budget, the state government committed an additional $417 million over four years for social and affordable housing and committed also to deliver at least 1 000 additional social housing dwellings over the next four years. An important strategy to increase social housing is to expand the community housing sector. Of the $417 million in funding that will be provided over the next four years, up to $210 million will be available to community housing providers to provide additional social housing. As at 30 June 2007, there were 15 438 applications on the waiting list. It is worthy to note that as at 1 June 2001, there were 15 584 applications. There are a small number of country areas in which applicants may have to wait seven years or more for specific types of accommodation. Accommodation may be offered earlier if the applicants can broaden their range of preferences.

Accommodation may be offered earlier if the applicants can broaden their range of preferences.
