❓ A parliamentary question probes the rationale behind reversing the outsourcing of school cleaning services, inquiring about benefits, cost savings, and complaint levels. The Minister acknowledges the questions' specificity and requests they be placed on notice.

QuestionView source ↗
I refer to the minister’s recent media announcement that school cleaners will be employed in-house and not outsourced by way of contract, as is the case at present. It is a 180-degree turnaround in position because the minister’s predecessor, Hon Alan Carpenter, refused pressure from the unions to do that. (1) What is the reason for the change other than union pressure? (2) What benefits in the cleaning of schools will be achieved by the change? (3) Will the minister inform the house whether there will be any savings in the education budget? (4) How many complaints have been received by the Department of Education and Training about the cleaning of schools? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for no notice of this question! (1)-(4) The government has given a commitment that it will bring the cleaning of schools back in-house as contracts expire. That commitment was announced during the election campaign. I personally support contracts being in-house. I have not been a supporter of contracting out. Hon Murray Criddle : Why? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH : Because I am not convinced that we end up with a better quality of service. Usually, it is at a higher price. For that reason I am very keen to see that, as contracts expire, cleaning is done in-house in accordance with the commitment made by the government. Concerning the savings and the number of complaints, the member will agree that they are questions of a fairly specific nature. As such, I ask that they be placed on notice.
