(1 - 2) A Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) amendment is now under consideration for Canning Highway from Petra Street East Fremantle to Glenelg Street Mt Pleasant to reduce the Important Regional Road Reservation from 80 meters wide to between 25 and 37 meters wide. For the segment of Canning Highway West of Risley Street the design allowed for bus priority queue jumps for all the major intersections in both directions. East of Risley Street adequate Reservation was retained for full bus lanes in both directions. A design was prepared for full bus lanes from Glenelg Street to Canning Bridge but the relatively small but potentially contentious amendments to protect these in the MRS have not been progressed.
In 2009 /10 the Department for Planning and Infrastructure is to commence a review of the existing 40m Reservation for Canning Highway between Canning Bridge and the Causeway. After consideration of the land use planning context and liaison with the local authorities and others the design will allow for bus queue jumps or dedicated lanes as appropriate.
This work is being targeted at rationalising the Reservation of land in the MRS and allowing surplus land to be zoned by the local authorities and developed. There are no timetables for constructing any bus priority works on Canning Highway at this stage.
