I congratulate the minister on her initiatives to bring land onto the market. Can the minister advise the house of her latest initiatives to bring even more land onto the housing market? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I thank the member for Swan Hills for the question. I was delighted to be with the member in her electorate recently to announce that we are bringing forward the release in Ellenbrook of some 140 lots on an earlier time frame. The SPEAKER : Order, members! I call the member for Cottesloe to order for the third time. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS : I also had the opportunity in recent weeks to be with the member for Geraldton in Geraldton, where we also brought forward the release of nearly 90 lots at Seacrest. There are huge demands for land and housing in Western Australia because our economy is so strong. As thousands of people head to Western Australia to reap the benefits of our strong economy, we are working together across government to improve land availability. That is why I was delighted to be able to announce that we have brought forward sales of land in both Ellenbrook and Geraldton. We are working on doing that with all our joint venture developments. In fact, in the northern suburbs in the past quarter, 75 per cent of the land that has been released has come from government joint ventures. The joint ventures of Ellenbrook, Somerly and Brighton made up 75 per cent of the land released in that north-east corridor. That is what we are working towards. In bringing forward the release and sale of these lots, we are saving people money. We know from figures recently released by the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia that land sales for the 12-month period to March 2006 increased by some 31 per cent. With the cost of land escalating month by month, if we can bring forward the release and sale of lots and people can make their purchases earlier, they can save money. I was also delighted to be able to announce in Ellenbrook that we have just received planning approval for village six, a new subdivision in Ellenbrook that will enable 1 900 more lots to come onto the market. Ellenbrook and Seacrest are just two of the many joint ventures in which our government is involved. Others of those, which some members opposite will be familiar with, are Dalyellup, Woodrise, Mevé, Brighton, Somerly, Wellard and Banksia Grove, just to name a few. Through these developments, the government will release thousands of lots over the coming years. When we bring some of our other projects on stream, such as Amarillo, up to 20 000 lots will be released. What do the people opposite say? Their opposition spokesperson, Hon Simon O’Brien, said, “Look, no-one is actually going to be living there. It’s more of an illusion than reality.” I say to them that they should tell that to the people who are securing their land and starting to plan their new homes right now. The SPEAKER : I call the member for Roe to order for the third time.
