I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1) The
Department of Parks and Wildlife works in collaboration with the Cities of
Joondalup and Wanneroo to undertake monitoring of midge larvae numbers in Lake
Joondalup and Lake Goollelal. Aerial spray treatment of the lakes is also
undertaken in partnership between the three organisations, with the first
treatment for 2013–14 scheduled for Wednesday, 30 October 2013.
(2) Measurements
were last taken on Tuesday, 29 October 2013.
(3) The
monitoring results for Lake Goollelal from 29 October 2013 are still to be
analysed, but the monitoring results from 17 October 2013, of 12 532 per square
metre, were higher than those taken on 19 October 2012, at 6 687 per square
metre.
(4) Chemical
treatment is the only effective short-term control measure.
(5) The
effectiveness of aerial spray control treatments can usually be determined soon
after application. DPaW and the Cities of Joondalup and Wanneroo undertake
midge larvae monitoring one or two days after aerial sprays to determine the
effectiveness of the treatment.
