LIVE EXPORT —
GOVERNMENT POLICY
424. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Premier:
I refer to Labor's federal
election defeat, which was labelled by many, including the Premier, as a repudiation
of federal Labor's policies.
(1) Given that voters indicated
their support for the continuation of live export, will the state —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! Start
again, member. It is not a free-for-all today. Question time will finish very
quickly. Member for Roe, start again.
Mr P.J. RUNDLE : Yes, Mr
Speaker.
(1) Given that
voters indicated their support for the continuation of live export, will the
state government abandon its anti–live export rhetoric and provide
support and certainty to the industry?
Mr D.A.
Templeman : How did ''Big'' Nick go?
The SPEAKER :
Probably better than you, Leader of the House. I call you to order for the
first time.
Several members
interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Members!
Mr P.J. RUNDLE :
I continue my question —
(2) Has the
Premier written to the new federal Labor leader, Anthony Albanese, to urge him
to ditch Labor's policy to shut down the live export industry?
Dr A.D. Buti interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale!

(1)–(2) I have two words to
say to the member for Roe: ''Big'' Nick!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr M. McGOWAN : I heard some
people refer to him as ''Biggus Nickus''!
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I have my
research assistant here, working feverishly on the National Party's
vote in the federal election, but from memory it was 1.2 per cent.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! Leader
of the National Party!
Mr M. McGOWAN : While my
research assistant —
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, I call you to order for the third time. I was on my feet and you
spoke twice, even when you stopped the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : The thing I
know about ''Biggus Nickus'' is that he is a very naughty boy! He
got 1.28 per cent of the vote. It turns out that a range of other
political parties got more votes than the National Party in the federal election.
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
National Party, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Having said
all that, and noting that the National Party does not have a sense of humour,
on the question of live export the government's position has been plain
the whole way along. We said that the industry needed to lift its standards and continue to lift its standards, and if
there were more examples of some of the shameful practices that happened in the past, the industry, of course, would not
have a future. That is what we had to say. I did not call for the
industry to be closed down. Obviously, we had a different point of view from
the federal opposition.
