(1) The Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) will fund the Garment Laboratory only until 30 June 2011. Negotiations with interested parties and private companies are ongoing with the objective of having the Garment Laboratory continue under an externally funded arrangement or as a new start up company if there is sufficient market interest.
(2) Fabric appraisal equipment costing ~$100,000 was purchased in July 2010 using Centre of Excellence Funding allocated specifically for the purpose. The new equipment allows the Garment Laboratoryto investigate the influence of fit on garment comfort which is essential to complete existing research contracts with the Sheep Cooperative Research Centre in 2010/11. This capability, which does not exist elsewhere in Australia, enhances the Garment Laboratory's capacity to attract new research contracts, and substantially boosts the likelihood that the Garment Laboratory will continue under an externally funded arrangement or as a new start up company after 30 June 2011.
(3) DAFWA provides funding for a Project Manager and a Project Officer. Up to four other staff are employed on a casual basis supported by industry research funds when the laboratory is fully operational.
(4) Australian Wool Innovation Limited and the Sheep Cooperative Research Centre have been kept informed of developments. WA Farmers Federation have been briefed.
(5) The contracts of the Project Manager and the Project Officer have been extended until 30 June 2011.
