I refer to the report by Marsden Jacob Associates commissioned by this government on expanding the Ord irrigation area at Kununurra. (1) Will the Premier please detail the key recommendations of the report? (2) When will the full contents be made public? (3) Does the report recommend genetically modified cotton for this area; and, if so, will the government support such a crop? (4) What does this independent report say about the development of Ord stage 2? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

I thank the member for some notice of the question. Although it might have been better directed to the minister responsible, I have a response provided by the Minister for Agriculture and Food and the Minister for State Development. (1) No. (2) The purpose of the 2004 report was to provide detailed advice to government on Ord stage 2. The government has not approved the release of the report to the public as it sought, through an expression of interest process, industry’s assessment of the viability of Ord stage 2. (3) The report considered a number of crop options but did not make a specific crop recommendation. (4) This was answered by part (2).
