Principal chaplaincy program
418. Mr Bevan Eatts to
the Minister for Education:
I refer to the principal
chaplaincy program that is in my electorate of Warren–Blackwood. It
provides vital assistance to local principals as their only source of face-to-face
pastoral care and wellbeing support. Given that this service is used by so many
regional principals, why is the minister unwilling to guarantee ongoing support
for this program?
The Speaker: I should have said that is the last
question.

I reaffirm that I am
very willing—very willing—to support the principals and leaders
in our schools, not only in the member's electorate, but throughout the state. In
fact, as a teacher of 27 years, I find it slightly offensive that the
suggestion would be made that my priority is not supporting principals and
leaders of our schools because I know what a good school—
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt.
Ms Sabine Winton: I know what good school leadership
means and the difference it makes in terms of supporting teachers.
Point of order
Dr Tony Buti: I refer you to standing order 95 about
constant interruptions to a debate. The minister is not asking for
interruptions and all we are hearing from the other side is constant
interruptions.
The Speaker: Thank you, minister. I will uphold that
point of order. The interjections are excessive and the member is not seeking
interjections. If you keep interjecting, I am going to call every person who
does.
Questions without notice resumed
Ms Sabine Winton: I would try and keep my contribution
brief, but when I get asked about schools and principals and school leaders, it
is very hard to not want to talk about how important they are in making sure
that we deliver great outcomes for students and families in their communities.
I can reassure everyone in this house that my priority is making sure that
school leaders, principals, deputies, level 3 classroom teachers—there are
a variety of leaders—are supported in doing the important work they do
each and every day. I reaffirm that we support principals and school leaders in
a variety of ways, through their own wellbeing, to support them in being the
best leaders they can be.
