With regard to the anti-social behaviour in the precincts surrounding empty Homeswest housing in Kalgoorlie and the answers provided to my question on notice 675 of 11 March 2003, I ask - (1) In relation to the minister’s answer to question 3, why has work at 28 Phoenix Place not yet commenced? (2) When does the minister estimate that 28 Phoenix Place will be released for sale? (3) Can the minister provide an update of whether the scope of works for 30 Phoenix Place have commenced and when is the repair work expected to begin? (4) Does the minister find it acceptable that his commitment of nearly two months ago has not been followed through by the department? Hon TOM STEPHENS

(1) Since my earlier response, the Department of Housing and Works has been unable to get a suitable contractor at a competitive price. I have, however, been assured by the director general that every effort is being made to expedite the matter. (2) Due to the unforeseen delays it is anticipated that 28 Phoenix Place will be released for sale by the end of July. (3) Work has not yet commenced but it will begin as soon as possible. (4) It is a matter that is beyond my control. However, I want to be sure that taxpayers are getting value for money in this project. I can assure the member that departmental staff are working tirelessly to progress this project. The member should also be aware that this project was initially with private enterprise and went nowhere for a long time. Considerable progress has been made due to the tireless efforts of the departmental officers in that area.
