This is the same question that was asked some time ago, to which I am told the minister has a reply.  Will the Treasurer provide an itemised list showing the claimed $485 million in budget blow-out? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

I thank the member for some notice of this question.  I am advised that the answer I am about to read out is correct as at 1 August 2001. The Government has undertaken an extensive review of agencies’ expenditure requirements over the forward years and has found a number of areas in which the previous Government did not make decisions to adequately fund agencies’ activities.  These issues remain under review as the Government formulates its budget for 2001-02 and the three out years.  I do not intend to detail all the areas.  However, the major areas of shortfall include health provision, funding for the Police Service’s Delta communications and information technology and computer-aided dispatch and communications projects, funding for the former Ministry of Fair Trading to address the issues raised in the Gunning inquiry, and funding for the Department of Justice associated with prisoner transfer.
