I understand that the Pilbara Meta Maya Regional Aboriginal Corporation has received state funding over the past two years to provide remote area essential services to communities in the Pilbara region. (1) Will the minister please advise whether Marble Bar is considered a remote area and is eligible to receive funding under the essential services scheme? (2) If so, will the minister advise why an unserviced open sewer, overgrown with grass, causing the system to be inefficient and an overall health hazard in the Pipunya community, has not been returned to proper working order? (3) If no to (1), who is responsible for maintaining essential services in Marble Bar and the Pipunya community? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Eligibility for funding for essential services for remote communities through the remote area essential services program is defined under the Agreement for the Provision of Essential Services to Indigenous Communities in Western Australia signed by the State, Commonwealth and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission on 18 October 2000. Under the agreement, funding is provided to large permanent remote communities with a normal population of at least 50 people. Marble Bar is not considered a remote community pursuant to the agreement. (2) Not applicable. See (3) below. (3) The maintenance of essential services to the town of Marble Bar is the responsibility of Western Power and the Water Corporation for power and water respectively. The Department of Housing and Works has accepted responsibility for the repairs as required to the waste water disposal system at the Pipunya community. The Department of Housing and Works will attend to the issue that has been raised.
