I would like to thank the member for Kingsley for her interest
in this particular subject. She has more than an interest. On the invitation of
the Premier, the member for Kingsley was involved in the development of a
report called ''Food for Thought'', a document that I have in
front of me. I recommend that everyone in this house take an opportunity to
read it. It basically sets out the state of play of the hospitality industry
and tourism sectors in Western Australia.
Yesterday was a hallmark day for Western Australia inasmuch
as the fantastic people at the Central Institute of Technology have pulled a
coup, if you like, in attracting world-renowned French academy Le Cordon Bleu
to offer a Bachelor of Business degree in tourism and international convention
and events management. This is the first time that Le Cordon Bleu has offered
these degrees anywhere in the world, and I am excited that the Central
Institute of Technology has been able to attract an international organisation
of that calibre to Western Australia to deliver these courses. The Bachelor of
Business in international convention and events management will commence in
2014, with a Bachelor of Business in tourism management to be available in
2015, which of course will be offered domestically and internationally; this
will bring people and income to this state and will just add to the great story
of what is happening in Western Australia. In addition, it demonstrates the
quality of our vocational education and training sector in Western Australia
that we have been able to attract an organisation of Le Cordon Bleu's
calibre to our state to offer these new degrees. The hospitality and tourism
sector is an integral part of the Western Australian economy.
Of course, the report that the member for Kingsley was
involved in is very timely, and we can say to the rest of Australia and the
world that this is a place where training, particularly vocational education
and training, is at its peak. I know that Mr Speaker is a very keen observer of
the culinary delights around the place, and we of course hope that this development
will reflect on the capacity of our restaurants in Western Australia to provide
fantastic food and attract additional income for Western Australia. Western
Australia is not just about the one-speed economy of the resource sector; we
are going to embark on a new era in a new landscape, if members like, in the
hospitality and tourism sectors. I would again like to place on record my
thanks to the member for Kingsley, and also to the Premier for inviting her to
embark on this fantastic report.
