I thank the member for Kalgoorlie
for the excellent question. It was a privilege to be in Kalgoorlie on Saturday
with the member for Kalgoorlie, the Mayor of Kalgoorlie–Boulder and Mr
Dominique Delorme of La Mancha, which is the company that has developed a gold
processing plant just outside Kalgoorlie. Mr Delorme is the deputy CEO of La
Mancha and he flew all the way from Paris for this event, and Dr Abu Fatima
flew all the way from Sudan. One of the things that impressed me about the
event was that it was a very family-centred function. It was set up so that the
wives, husbands and children of the workers could attend the opening of the
mill. The wives and husbands and their children could see where their parents
worked. It was a great function. The children were engaged in a lot of
activities. The event was about the new gold processing mill, which is only the
second one to open in Kalgoorlie. The other one was Kanowna Belle in 1993. It
is a very important gold processing plant for Kalgoorlie. It will allow La Mancha
to open up an old open-cut mine called the White Foil mine, which was a large
open-pit mine full of water. This new gold processing plant means this
particular open-pit mine will now become productive. The cost of production
will reduce by $100 an ounce through this new processing plant. This open-cut
mine, the White Foil mine, currently has a grade of about two grams per tonne,
as the member for Kalgoorlie would know, which means this is now a viable mine.
Of interest was the fact that it was full of water. It has taken 12 months to
de-water this open-cut mine. That would be of interest to the engineers in the
house. The actual mine produces six litres of water a second. It is a very
expensive —
Mr M.P. Murray : I
can piddle faster than that!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Members!
Mr M.H. Taylor :
Table it!
The SPEAKER : Thank
you very much. Thank you for that engineering advice. Let's go.
Mr W.R. MARMION : I
was impressed with six litres per second. I cannot beat the member for Collie–Preston!
I know the Speaker would like me to
wind it up. It means the treatment plant can now treat 160 000 ounces per annum.
It has provided 120 jobs for people who actually live in Kalgoorlie. The actual
processing plant is only about 20 kilometres from Kalgoorlie. It is great news
for Kalgoorlie. La Mancha invested $250 million into the community. Most of the
work has gone to local companies in Kalgoorlie and Geraldton. The electrical
circuits were done by a company from Geraldton. It is good news for Kalgoorlie,
it is good news for the regions and it is good news for the gold industry in
Western Australia.
