I ask a supplementary question. Will the minister confirm that there has been a massive blow-out in the cost of the Government’s preferred option for the city route of the southern rail link and it now intends to secure private sector involvement to help meet the increased cost? Ms MacTIERNAN

AnswerView source ↗

Absolutely not! The options will be somewhat more expensive than those which we had previously considered. There is no difficulty with that because an enhanced plan is likely to cost more. However, unlike the previous Government’s decision on a public-private partnership, this Government has decided against a PPP for the purchase of the rail cars. A PPP is not something that only socialists get, Mr Speaker! This Government has no plans to involve the private sector in the provision of rail services; however, we are always open to any suggestions for private sector involvement.
