(1&2) Recruiting strategies take into account fluctuations in authorised strength due to attrition. The authorised strength of the police service is 4698 sworn officers. The current number of sworn officers is 4696. (a) As at 1 March 2000, the number was 4637. An Academy intake on 6 March saw this figure rise to 4666, a shortfall of 32. (b) On 1 April 2000, the number was 4639, a shortfall of 59. (c) By 1 May 2000 the number was 4627, a shortfall of 71. By 31 May 2000, Academy intakes saw the number increase to 4660 a shortfall of 38.
