REX airlines
94. Hon Colin de Grussa to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Transport:
I refer to the
placement of REX Airlines into voluntary administration in 2024, with debts
owed to each of the Shires of Albany, Esperance and Carnarvon exceeding
$400,000.
(1)
Given that the state government was solely responsible for awarding the
monopoly rights to REX to fly to these ports, what actions has the state
government taken to assist with the recovery of those debts?
(2)
In the absence of those debts being recovered, what financial assistance will
be provided by the state government to the respective shires to offset the
losses?
(3)
Has the state government played any role in the negotiation of airport fees
between REX and airport owners on regulated intrastate air routes?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. I provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(2)
Ernst and Young, the appointed administrator, has met with creditors, including
local government-owned airports. The administration process is ongoing and it
is not appropriate to speculate on the potential outcomes of that process.
(3)
No. Airport fees are commercial arrangements between airlines and airports. The
state government remains focused on supporting affordable airfares for regional
Western Australians.
