I refer to the proposed Coalmine in Osmington, Margaret River, and ask -
(1) What is the potential for hydraulic connectivity between the Leederville aquifer and the underlying coal seam?
(2) What will be the consequential impacts of dewatering underground mining operations on water resources supporting townsites, agriculture, viticulture and tourism?
(3) What is the potential for contamination of surface and resources as a result of dewatering the mine?
(4) What is the availability of water for abstraction if the mine needs a groundwater allocation?
(5) What is the connectivity between the Leederville aquifer and the Yarragadee aquifer?

The Minister for Water has provided the following response:
(1) There is strong evidence to confirm that the Sue aquifer is hydraulically connected to the overlying Leederville aquifer upon the northern portion of the Vasse Shelf, including the Treeton Terrace, which contains the proposed underground mining footprint.
(2-3) The proposal has not been presented for assessment for water licensing and as such the consequential impacts have not been determined.
(4) There is minimal water available for new long term entitlements.  Water may however be available through trading or short term access arrangements.
(5) There is no connection at the proposed location of the mine as the Yarragadee is absent.
