PILBARA CITIES — PORT HEDLAND WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT
I draw the minister’s attention to the Premier’s vision for cities in the Pilbara and his proposal to transform the towns of Karratha and Port Hedland. (1) How can any further expansion of the key areas adjacent to Pretty Pool, Cooke Point and Spinifex Hill, on the eastern end of the town of Port Hedland, take place when the Water Corporation’s waste water treatment plant is situated right in the middle of the proposed development area? (2) Does the minister agree with the Water Corporation’s stated rejection of requests to move the waste water treatment plant in order to allow land development to take place there? (3) If the minister does not agree with the Water Corporation’s refusal to shift the plant, what actions has the minister taken to secure the funding to carry out the move—funding that is estimated at somewhere between $35 million and $80 million? The SPEAKER : Minister, before you answer that question, I advise all members in this place that seeking a personal opinion is not part of question time, but, minister, you may decide to answer that question. Dr G.G. JACOBS

Thank you, Mr Speaker. I am pleased to give an answer to the member, who has communicated with me on this very issue. (1)–(3) We recognise the water plant requirements of the Pilbara into the future, including waste water treatment. As I said, I have received communication from the member for Pilbara, and he would have received communication from me on the matter. I have given an undertaking to him to talk to the Water Corporation, as I do almost every week about issues, because this is an important issue. The issue is about where the waste water treatment plant is located and the impact that will have on future development. These are matters that we deal with all the time and there are some operational issues in there. The Pilbara water plan will be released in the next week or two. In relation to the infrastructure and funding, I suppose I could say that we have one more sleep and then members will see some of the plans that we have for the future and the relevant funding that may be put into those. I am working on those things operationally with the Water Corporation. The communication has been made, and I give an undertaking to the member to continue to work on those, and I hope that he will continue to communicate with me on this important matter.
