(1) On what blocks is it legal to collect firewood on Department of Conservation and Land Management land within the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes? (2) What amount of wood may one person collect? Hon KIM CHANCE
AnswerView source ↗
I thank Hon Robyn McSweeney for notice of the question. (1) All forest blocks in the estate managed by the Department of Conservation and Land Management in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes currently contain areas of state forest. Commercial firewood cutting can occur only in designated timber harvest coupes. The executive director of the Department of Conservation and Land Management may, by order published in the Government Gazette , set aside any area of state forest for the purposes of collection of firewood by members of the public. Public firewood areas may be fee payable or non-fee payable. There are currently no fee payable public firewood areas in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes. It is illegal to sell firewood removed from a public firewood area. The department is reviewing the designation of appropriate public firewood areas in the south west. A person may also collect firewood in the immediate vicinity of the camping area if a sign authorising the collection of firewood has been erected and the firewood is intended for use in a campfire or barbecue in the designated area. Under the Government’s protecting our old-growth forests policy and the proposed forest management plan many areas of state forest in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes are proposed to become national parks or reserves. These areas are managed as though the park or reserve has been created, and activities such as firewood collection are discouraged through signage and other public communications in those areas. (2) One tonne of firewood may be collected from within public firewood areas in any 60-day period between 1 June and 30 September or on one occasion between 1 October and 31 May.
