Government buildings—Karratha
7. Hon Julie Freeman to
the parliamentary secretary representing the
Minister for Housing and Works:
I refer to the
abandoned state government office buildings on Welcome Road in Karratha, some
of which have been vacant since 2021, while housing shortages and office space
pressures continue locally.
(1) What is the reason for the extended vacancy of
these buildings and why have they remained unused for such a prolonged period?
(2) What is the government's clear and definitive
plan for this site and when will that plan be implemented?
(3) What is the current annual power bill for the
site given the buildings are boarded up but the lights remain on?

I thank the member for some notice of the question. I
provide the following on behalf of the Minister for Housing and Works.
(1) The buildings are unfit for occupancy due to
significant structural issues.
(2) Options for the future of the site are being
considered by government.
(3) The electricity supply operates security and
emergency management systems at the site and is required for public safety, the
cost of which is estimated to be approximately $20,000.
