The Premier acknowledges receiving the report but hasn't read it, defers to the Federal Government on its release, and disputes the origin of the funding.

(1) Has the Premier been given a copy of the Federal Government’s due diligence report into the Kimberley tidal power project? (2) If so, has the Premier read the report and can he confirm that it concluded the project was technically and financially viable, as Wilson Tuckey claimed this morning, and will he table a copy of the report? (3) Can the Premier also confirm that the Federal Government has offered to make funding available for the project? (4) Given these developments, what action does the Premier now intend to take? Mr COURT

(1)-(4) I am not aware that the report is a due diligence study. The State Government has received a copy of the report. However, as the Federal Government is still considering the issue, the report has been given to us in confidence. I have not read the report. I gave it to the Minister for Energy so his people could study it. It is up to the Federal Government whether it wants to make the report public. It is not for me to decide whether any action should be taken. The Government, through Western Power, is undertaking a process to obtain power for the west Kimberley. The member asked about money. I make it clear that any money the Federal Government says is available for the project is actually state money; it is money the State pays as a result of a diesel excise on off-grid diesel power generation. It is drawing a long bow to say that it is federal government money. Mr Ripper: Isn’t it a tied grant? Mr COURT: It is money the State pays to the Commonwealth. The Federal Government says that Western Australia will get the money back if certain things are done. We have never had to pay the excise previously and regard it as an additional burden on the State. We said so when it was introduced.
