MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION STICKERS
I refer to the minister’s assertion that the government will save $2 million over four years by removing registration stickers from car windscreens. (1) Will he confirm that this saving will lead to a reduction in the recording fee and total amount paid by consumers? (2) How much revenue is currently gained from prosecuting vehicle owners who do not display a current registration sticker? (3) How much of the estimated savings of $500 000 per annum will be for postage, printing and labour costs? (4) Will this change have any impact on WA-licensed vehicles being driven on roads in other states of Australia? Hon SIMON O’BRIEN

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) The provision of registration stickers is a component of the recording fee. The recording fee will reflect the cost of providing the service, and any changes will be taken into account when determining the fee. (2) This question should be referred to the Minister for Police. (3) Savings on printing and distribution are in the order of $185 000 based on 2007-08 actual expenditure. The combined cost of postage and labour is estimated at about $315 000 per annum. (4) Other states will be advised of the legislative change relating to the display of stickers on WA-registered vehicles.
