FLY CONTROL
I refer to the minister’s response to question without notice 96 of 27 February that — The issues associated with the reported build-up in fly numbers over the 2007-08 summer season are still being evaluated. Could the minister please clarify — (a) the method of evaluation, given that fly populations are not officially monitored and have not been for some years; and (b) the expected time frame for completion of the evaluation and recommendations? I thank Hon Nigel Hallett for providing some notice of the question. (a) The issues being evaluated in the review by the Department of Agriculture and Food, in conjunction with Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation entomologists, include the climatic and pasture conditions over the south west for the spring and summer of 2007-08, which was a particularly bad period for flies; the likelihood of those conditions occurring again; the reports of stakeholder concern; and the localities most affected. (b) A report is expected to be finalised by the end of April.
