FIREARMS ACT — VOLUNTEER WILDLIFE CARERS
1344. Hon NEIL THOMSON to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to the Firearms Act 2024
and its impact on volunteer wildlife carers' ability to carry out their
volunteer activities, in particular to euthanise injured wildlife or sedate
injured animals that need to be moved.
(1) Under the
Firearms Act 2024, which is the appropriate licence that allows individual
volunteers registered with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and
Attractions as animal control agents to carry out activities when requested
such as euthanising wildlife injured by road accidents or stuck in fences?
(2) Is a prearranged
permit and permission required from the landowner for each and every time this
activity is required?
(3) If yes to
(2), how long do these permits typically take to approve, and who is
responsible for approving this activity in the event this activity needs to be
done on a public road?
(4) Is a professional
shooter business licence the only suitable licence that allows wildlife carer
volunteers to carry out the sedation of animals by means of a tranquiliser
firearm?
