PROPOSED CEMETERY — WHITEMAN PARK VICINITY
I refer to ministerial correspondence sent to the member for West Swan, dated 8 June 2009, in relation to the area of land south of Whiteman Park. (1) Is the government still considering establishing a cemetery in this area? (2) If yes — (a) what stage is the approval or planning process at and what community consultation has been undertaken; and (b) what is the projected time line for the establishment of this cemetery? (3) If no to (1), how does the government intend to use the land? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) The Western Australian Planning Commission, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board, is in the process of establishing the suitability of land in the vicinity of Marshall Road south of Whiteman Park. The previous Whiteman Park board was supportive of the proposal. (2) (a) The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board has expressed concern in regard to the lack of availability of suitable land in the north east metropolitan corridor to cater for future cemetery needs, as the South Guildford and Midland sites are environmentally constrained. To date, only preliminary consideration has been given to the establishment of a cemetery on the land that includes current assessment of the physical suitability of the land for cemetery purposes, due to the high water table present in the area. A parkland-style development similar to Pinnaroo is the preferred option as the best fit to the community values of Whiteman Park. (b) A definite time frame has not been set, as the suitability of the site has not been fully established at present. (3) Any other proposals for the land would have to be considered by the Western Australian Planning Commission.
