I refer to the direction that can be given under section 13(3) of the Legal Practitioners Act 1893 that enables an articled clerk to engage in other employment within the hours of 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on weekdays. (1) How many such directions have been issued in each year between 1990 and 2003? (2) What were the categories of alternative employment for which such directions were given? (3) Were any of them for a form of non-legal employment, for example, not involving teaching law or judicial administration law; and, if so, what category of employment were they? (4) Were any of them for a type of employment that engaged the entire working week from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm; and, if so, what category of employment were they? (5) If the answer to either (3) or (4) is in the affirmative, will the Attorney General provide the name of the articled clerk and the year in which the direction was given? Hon TOM STEPHENS
