Advice was received today that the annual rock lobster coastal tour by the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Council has been changed from 10-12 October to 7-10 November, owing to the fourth National Rock Lobster Congress to be held in Tasmania during this time in October. As the rock lobster fishermen will be very busy preparing for the opening of the season on 15 November, I ask - (1) Is the minister in a position to assure the industry that RLIAC will arrange its annual tour next year to take place no later than October 2006 to ensure maximum participation by fishermen at these very important forums for their industry? (2) Will the minister also ensure that the tour package is distributed earlier than two weeks before the November 2005 tour commences? Hon JON FORD

I thank Hon Bruce Donaldson for the question. (1)-(2) I was also bemused at the change of the tour dates. After repeated requests to make sure that the tour was not going to be held during a parliamentary sitting period so that I could attend some of the tours, RLIAC has managed to exclude me as well. Of course, I have been invited on the tour. Hon Simon O’Brien : I am sure that it was not deliberate. Hon JON FORD : No, I am sure that it was not, especially when I found out that it was to facilitate a trip to Tasmania. I will raise the issue with RLIAC to ensure that there is more time next year. It is very important. I want to be involved this year in particular, because we have put out a discussion paper on the integrated fishing management of rock lobster, and that will be an important part of the tour. I will bring the issue to the notice of the committee to ensure that all the information is given to fishermen in a timely manner. Hon Bruce Donaldson : Earlier than just two weeks? Hon JON FORD : Yes.
