740. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the
Minister for Environment:
(1) When will
Lynas Corporation Ltd's rare earth concentrate be moved from the
stockpiles at Bibra Lake to Fremantle port for shipping?
(2) How will it be transported?
(3) What environmental monitoring will occur?
(4) Is the
minister aware that Lynas, which will process the rare earth in Malaysia, is
seeking a solution to the management issue of radioactive and hazardous rare
earth waste and is seeking a permanent disposal facility?
(5) Is the
minister giving consideration to that facility being located in Western
Australia?

I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1) The timing
of transport of rare earth concentrate from the Bibra Lake holding yard to the
port of Fremantle for export is an operational matter for Lynas Corporation.
(2) Concentrate
will be transported in containers on trucks by road to the port of Fremantle.
(3) Monitoring
of concentrate being transported will be undertaken in accordance with Lynas
Corporation's approved transport management plan and radiation
management plan and any other applicable legislation.
(4)–(5) No.
