PORT COOGEE — CONTAMINATION NOTICES
I refer the minister to the article in yesterday’s The West Australian titled “Contamination bans bores in Port Coogee”. (1) When was the minister first made aware that the Department of Environment and Conservation had sent out contamination notices to landowners in the new Port Coogee development? (2) What advice did the department provide to the minister about the quality of local groundwater? (3) When did the department advise the affected landowners that their sites had been classified “remediated for restricted use”? Hon DONNA FARAGHER

I thank the member for her question and ask whether I may have a copy of the question in order to be able to provide a more detailed answer. (1)-(3) I received advice about this issue yesterday and some further advice today. I will preface my comments by saying that this matter is now subject to appeal and will go to the Contaminated Sites Committee for investigation; consequently I am somewhat limited in what I can say. I understand that the Department of Environment and Conservation has been in consultation and has had regular contact with Australand for some time about this issue, which dates back to around 2003. I understand the department advised landowners on 17 February 2009, but I will confirm that date and if different I will advise the house.
