Housing—Brick supply
501. Hon Steve Martin to
the parliamentary secretary representing the
Minister for Housing and Works:
I refer to material
supply constraints on the provision of housing supply.
(1) Is the minister or his department
aware of any brick shortages impacting WA leading to delays in the time taken
to provide bricks to customers compared to recent years?
(2) Has the minister consulted with the housing
supply unit about this issue and what was the result of that consultation?
(3) Can the minister provide any data to
show that this is not an issue?
(4) Does the housing supply unit or any
other state government body charged with housing-related functions have any
data on how many bricks are on backorder waiting to be produced in WA?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. I provide the following on
behalf of the Minister for Housing and Works.
(1)–(4) Brick supply constraints are part of
broader construction supply chain pressures that emerged following the COVID-19
pandemic. The Cook government is looking at every opportunity to deliver
housing supply to market. This includes significant investment in modern
methods of construction such as prefabrication, modular housing and automated
building technologies through initiatives including the Housing Innovation
Fund, designed to accelerate new builds, improve productivity and boost housing
supply. There is regular engagement with the industry and key suppliers in the
housing industry on materials and supply chains. However, data of this nature
is not collected.
