I refer to the capacity of existing women’s refuges to meet demand for their services in recent years. (1) How many women and children were temporarily accommodated in motels or caravan parks by the Department for Community Development in the Perth area during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 financial years? (2) How much did this cost the department in - (a) 2002-03; and (b) 2003-04? (3) How many of the women and children accommodated in this manner were finally accommodated in a refuge? (4) How many left the motel or caravan accommodation before refuge accommodation became available? (5) How did the department ensure that these families were safe while staying in motel or caravan park accommodation? (6) What support did the department put in place for these families in crisis until they could be safely accommodated in a refuge? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) Statistics can be generated on the number of occasions financial assistance was given to families for accommodation through the family crisis program, if required, but not the total number of women and children. The member should note that there is a variety of reasons women would be accommodated on a temporary basis; the capacity of women’s refuges is just one. (3) The department does not collect statistics on this. (4)-(6) A file audit would need to be undertaken in each individual case to answer this question. This information is not available.
