I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
(1) The criteria
used in 2016 for students to be able to attend the Midland Learning Academy
trial include: based on 2015 student attendance data, zero to 30 per cent
attendance; lead school psychologist and education region recommendations; and
all attempts to engage the students in traditional schooling having been
exhausted and all previous strategies having been ineffective.
(2) The Midland
Learning Academy is for secondary students—years 7 to 12. Primary
school students would be ineligible to attend. Each application for enrolment
is viewed independently.
(3) Extensive
work was conducted on the Midland Learning Academy site prior to the
commencement of the 2016 school year. This included perimeter fencing, internal
classroom and office refurbishment, information communication technology, telephone
communications system and signage.
(4) All schools
and work sites are covered by the department's occupational safety and
health policy. The duties required of all departmental personnel, including
principals and line managers, are detailed in this policy and it is expected to
be applied, as far as is practicable, to provide and maintain a working
environment in which employees of the department are not exposed to hazards. As
part of their obligations as managers of departmental workplaces, principals at
all school sites are also required to be familiar with the code of practice of
the Commission for Occupational Safety and Health on violence, aggression and
bullying at work.
(5) I have the information. I table
that information.
