CORONAVIRUS — APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES
804. Hon PETER COLLIER to
the Minister for Education and Training:
My question is asked on behalf of Hon
Donna Faragher, who is on urgent parliamentary business.
I refer to the impact of COVID-19 on
apprentices and trainees in Western Australia.
(1) For each calendar month of 2020,
how many apprentices and trainees commenced training?
(2) For each calendar month of 2019,
how many apprentices and trainees commenced training?
(3) For each
calendar month of 2020, how many apprentices and trainees undertaking training
were made redundant?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) The McGowan government understands the importance
of supporting our apprentices and trainees during this time so they can
continue their training and be ready to take advantage of job opportunities as
they arise during recovery. Measures
put in place by the McGowan government to support WA apprentices and trainees with the impact of COVID-19 include: $4.8 million
for an apprenticeship and traineeship re-engagement incentive to provide
financial support to employers who take on a displaced apprentice or trainee; a $30.6 million support package to assist building
and construction apprentices and trainees; an out-of-contract register to help connect employers with out-of-contract
apprentices and trainees; scrapping fees for more than 3 000 displaced
apprentices and trainees so they can continue their training off the job for
six months without financial hardship; and establishing the apprenticeship
office helpline to provide free information and advice on all commonwealth and
state financial assistance and alternatives to cancelling contracts.

(3) Data is not available
on the number of apprentices and trainees who are made redundant. The number of
monthly apprenticeship and traineeship terminations is shown in a table. These
figures do not include suspensions.
Given there is another table for
January through to June of this year, I seek leave to have the response
incorporated into Hansard .
Leave granted.

Of those terminations since 1 March
2020, more than 10 per cent have since re-engaged with another employer. The
number of suspended apprentices and trainees peaked at the end of April 2020.
Of these, 53 per cent have since reactivated or completed their training
contracts.
