AUSTRALIAN MENTAL HEALTH, ALCOHOLAND OTHER DRUG SERVICES PLAN 2015–2025''
— UPDATE
81. Mr S.K. L'ESTRANGE to the Minister for Mental
Health:
I have a supplementary question. I thank
the minister. There was another aspect in that question, and I will just
reiterate it as a supplementary question. Given the delay in the release of the
two-year plan update, what assurances can the minister give to the house that
the government is working on ensuring the integration of mental health, alcohol
and other drug services in WA?

We have the Mental Health
Commission, which, as the member knows, is responsible for alcohol and other
drug services. It is working day in, day out to try to fulfil the needs of
mental health patients right across the community. It is working tirelessly to
make sure that, in particular, consumers who come to our emergency departments
suffering from mental health conditions and/or presenting with symptoms of
abuse of alcohol or other drugs have the
services they need. For instance, we have already introduced an urgent care
clinic toxicology unit at Royal Perth Hospital, which is a way in which
we can divert patients and consumers coming to the ED into a de-escalated
environment so that they receive the care they need in a more appropriate
environment. It is an integrated service to assist those suffering from
psychosis or a mental health episode, but also those who are exhibiting alcohol
or other drug issues. The member will also be aware from our recent
announcement, following on from the Methamphetamine Action Plan Taskforce, of
the creation of a mental health and alcohol and other drugs crisis centre at
Midland Health Campus, where we have another opportunity to make sure that we
integrate and provide better services for patients presenting with those
issues.
Of course, we are the government
that introduced drug and alcohol rehabilitation services for prisoners in our
system. I commend the Minister for Corrective Services, who has already
introduced that in our women's prison and will soon be introducing it
in our men's prisons. I understand from reports from the Minister for
Corrective Services that we are having outstanding results from that particular
service in Wandoo Rehabilitation Prison. That is something of which we are very
proud.
We are continuing to provide a range
of services for those who are suffering from alcohol and other drug issues,
particularly when they are co-presenting with mental health issues. The rollout
of our current 19 plus another 12 beds for alcohol and other drug
rehabilitation services in the south west is absolutely an example of and
testament to that.
The SPEAKER : Just before we
continue, I would like to let the ministers know that when there is a matter of
public interest, we have to finish by ten to three, so if you make your answers
a little bit quicker, we can get through more questions. Thank you.
Mr R.H. Cook interjected.
The SPEAKER : I backdate that
one to you!
