INDIAN
OCEAN DRIVE — TOILET FACILITIES
501. Hon RICK MAZZA to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Tourism:
A trip along Indian Ocean Drive between Wanneroo and Jurien
Bay is a wonderful way to experience 169 kilometres of Western Australia's
spectacular coastline.
(1) Can the
minister advise how many public toilets are available to motorists on that
169-kilometre section?
(2) Is the minister aware that motorists are forced to use
the roadside bushland as ad hoc latrines?
(3) Is the
minister aware of the proliferation of used toilet paper and tissue as a result
of the lack of public facilities?
(4) Does the
minister acknowledge that the lack of public facilities is a negative
reflection on WA's tourism reputation?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1)–(4)
Indian Ocean Drive has not only opened up a scenic part of Western Australia's
coastline to motorists and reduced travel time and provided an alternative to
using Brand Highway, but also opened up towns along the route to the benefits
of tourism generated by travellers visiting to buy goods and services. Public
toilets are located in Cervantes, Ledge Point, Seabird, Guilderton and
Lancelin, all of which are easily accessible from Indian Ocean Drive. It is
important that all Western Australians take pride in their state and accept the
shared responsibility of keeping the pristine environment free of litter.
For the information of the member,
there is an Australian government website on the locations of public toilets.
People can input their destination and trip details and it will show them the
locations of all the toilets.
Several members interjected.
Hon ALYSSA HAYDEN : The website is www.toiletmap.gov.au. I
also table a map from the website for the benefit of the member.
Hon Rick Mazza : What about an app?
Hon ALYSSA HAYDEN : There is an app.
The PRESIDENT : It is marvellous what Google does!
