COMMISSIONER FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE —
BLAXELL REPORT
692. Hon SALLY TALBOT to the Attorney General:
I refer to the
statutory review of the Commissioner for Children and Young People Act 2006,
and the implementation of the recommendation from the Blaxell inquiry to make
the office of the Commissioner for Children and Young People a one-stop shop
for complaints concerning child abuse.
(1) When will
the Attorney General respond to the report prepared by the Public Sector
Commission and provided to him on 31 May 2013 regarding the outcome of the
review into the act and the amendments necessary to enable the commissioner to
perform the one-stop shop function?
(2) Will the
report be made public; if so, when; and, if not, why not?
(3) When will
the legislative changes needed to implement the recommendations be introduced
to Parliament?
(4) Given the
importance of a central one-stop shop for complaints concerning child abuse,
when will the Commissioner for Children and Young People be given permanency
rather than the current temporary contract?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1)–(4) The
statutory review, which includes recommendations with respect to the Blaxell
inquiry, is under consideration and will be tabled in due course. I have asked
for further work to be undertaken to augment the review, particularly options
available to government that might better support the effective and efficient
operations of the Commissioner for Children and Young People Act 2006. I will
respond once I have fully considered all the information before me.
