ELIZABETH
QUAY — ARTEFACTS
178. Hon KATE DOUST to the
minister representing the Minister for Planning:
I refer to recent media reports about historic material
excavated at the Elizabeth Quay site.
(1) Were the finds
reported to the WA Museum; and, if so, when?
(2) Does the
Maritime Archaeology Act 1973 apply in this situation; and, if not, why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
member for some notice of the question.
(1) Previous
finds were reported to the WA Museum in 2013.
(2) The Maritime
Archaeology Act 1973 applies to items prior to 1900 and therefore is not
applicable to the two finds of note. Archaeological assessment of the recent
discovery remains ongoing.
