ROAD
SAFETY — COUNTRY FATALITIES
482. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the
Minister for Road Safety:
I have a supplementary question. Given that all the minister's
talk and failed strategies have delivered a 50 per cent increase in deaths on
country roads this year, why does the minister not admit she has failed and
hand over the portfolio to somebody who can do something about reducing the
road toll —
The SPEAKER : That
is not a question, member for Midland. That is a statement.
Mrs M.H. ROBERTS :
It is a question, and it is as follows —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Sit
down, please.
Mrs M.H. ROBERTS :
Mr Speaker, I taught English; I know what a question is!
The SPEAKER : Thank
you. I have had it with the member for Midland. I asked you to do succinct questions.
I want succinct answers. Will you ask a succinct question?
Mrs M.H. ROBERTS :
Given that the minister has failed and there has been a 50 per cent increase in
country road fatalities, why does the minister not resign and hand over the
portfolio?

I reiterate that when we came to government, we changed the
parameters around the road trauma trust fund, which this year has enabled us to
allocate $146 million for road safety initiatives. When we analyse our road
fatalities this year, we acknowledge that awful and tragic Labor Day long
weekend in March when we lost 11 lives on our roads; that was a very difficult
weekend of concentrated trauma for us to recover from as a community. But we
will continue to ensure that we invest the red-light and speed-camera
infringement money into initiatives that will help improve road safety outcomes
in Western Australia. That will be the highest ever allocation from the road
trauma trust fund to run-off-road crashes on regional roads, metropolitan
intersections, education campaigns and education in schools. We need every
piece of the strategy working together to help us achieve our Towards Zero strategy
in 2020.
